Gupta’s evocative series of photographs from 1984–1986, Lovers: Ten Years On was made in the UK, in response to a shift in public perception and acceptance of gay liberation. Since the arrival of Aids in the 1970s, popular and commercial representation had been dominated by a stereotype of deviance. In direct contrast, Gupta shows gay couples as ordinary, professional, middle class and in loving relationships. Photographed in domestic interiors and in affectionate poses, the couples are centred in the frame, looking directly at the camera. Individually titled with the first names of the couple depicted, each photograph follows the same format, reminiscent of a traditional family photo shoot.
