Hales is delighted to announce that The Doors of Perception: The Paintings of John Hoyland is now on view at The Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, Latvia, through 18 September 2023.
Curated by Philip Dodd, former Director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, The Doors of Perception includes more than twenty important paintings by Hoyland, ranging from 1964 to 2011. A fully illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition.
Daugavpils was the birthplace of Mark Rothko (1903-1970), an artist of immense importance to Hoyland. Rothko's profound influence on Hoyland is encapsulated in his eulogy to the artist. Hoyland stated: 'He painted zones of reality; his life was beautiful before he entered a sphere of darkness. Independent of signs, space existed before the beginning of form but retaining feeling as a living reality. Hovering on the edge of tragedy he lit a candle that will never go out." Opening concurrently with The Doors of Perception at The Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre is a new display of paintings by Rothko, on loan from the artist's family.
