Hew Locke | Here's the Thing | Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art

Hales is pleased to announce that Hew Locke’s solo exhibition, Here's the Thing, will soon tour to the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. The most comprehensive exhibition to-date of work by Locke – which will include two works from the Kemper Museum Permanent Collection – this exhibition involves a wide range of media, making extensive use of collage and found objects, including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, and installation.

Since his emergence as an artist in the 1980s, Hew Locke has been remarkably consistent in his preoccupation with the languages of colonial and post-colonial power, and the symbols through which different cultures assume and assert identity. He appropriates coats-of-arms and trophies, weaponry, naval warships, and the costumes and regalia of state in a subtle critique of governmental authority, its iconographies and legacies.

Hew Locke: Here’s the Thing is organized by Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, UK, and a full-color catalogue is being produced by Ikon Gallery in conjunction with the exhibition.
