Hales Gallery Project Space: Thomas J Price, Richard Galpin, Jane Wilbraham, Richard Slee, Sebastiaan Bremer

16 - 19 October 2013
Overview

Hales Gallery is glad to present an extended exhibition programme to run alongside Frank Bowling OBE RA: The Map Paintings 1967-1971. Between 15 and 19 October 2013, the gallery will be presenting a selection of works by artists Tom Price, Richard Galpin, Jane Wilbraham, Richard Slee and Sebastiaan Bremer in two temporary project spaces located next door to the main gallery.

Tom Price's bronze's mimic the postures and poses of classical sculpture. The fictional characters become vehicles for contemporary emotional, political and technological scenarios. Network, 2013, the artist's new 9 foot tall bronze, will be on show before it departs London to be shown at the prestigious Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Richard Galpin is primarily known for his carefully deconstructed cityscape photographs. Galpin's recent experiments have resulted in a new series of sculptural works using the materials, technologies and techniques of building construction. Separation (RAL3011-BS381c453-RAL9016), 2013, is the first of these pieces to be exhibited.

Jane Wilbraham's delicately carved Orchard, 2013, assembled from a multiplicity of fruitwoods suggest a shamanistic revisiting of vernacular traditions for the modern age.

Richard Slee's Hammers, 2009/10, were originally shown at his solo exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, From Utility to Futility, 2010. On this occasion the contrasting fragility of the materials and the toughness of their imagery are emphasised by a reassembling the work in the gallery's raw temporary space.

Sebastiaan Bremer's painted C-prints from his Schoener Goetterfunken, 2010/11 and Nilsson, 2012/13, series will also be profiled in the adjacent window project space.

Access to these spaces can be gained through the normal Hales Gallery entrance at 7 Bethnal Green Road.
