The Bluecoat,
A group exhibition featuring contemporary painting where artists are engaged with the very nature of the medium. Painterly concerns with method and illusion push ahead of narrative needs. The exhibition is an attempt to make sense of the slow magic that is painting, by presenting different ways artists explore the power of brushstroke daubs, drips and drags, or the sensual or playful ways they coax pigment and palette.
Visual tricks to suggest space and subvert flatness are territory explored through selections of work for exhibition. Perception (the act of seeing as well as and the perceived function of painting) is a significant concern for examination, and the artist's sleight of hand and the science of enchantment also inform the selection of works.
